As India celebrated the dawn of 2025, Uttarakhand emerged as a winter wonderland, captivating thousands of travelers with its breathtaking landscapes, pristine snow, and a festive atmosphere. Among the many destinations, Kedarkantha, Harshil, and Dayara stood out, drawing record crowds and offering a slice of heaven on Earth for those seeking adventure and serenity alike.
Kedarkantha: The Trekker’s Paradise
Nestled in the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary, Kedarkantha is a dream destination for trekking enthusiasts. Rising to an altitude of 12,500 feet, the Kedarkantha peak is adorned with a thick blanket of snow during winter, making it a mesmerizing sight. The trek, suitable for beginners and seasoned hikers alike, passes through enchanting pine forests, open meadows, and quaint villages, offering panoramic views of the majestic Himalayan ranges.
- Accessibility: Kedarkantha is easily accessible from Sankri village, which serves as the base camp for the trek. Sankri is about 200 km from Dehradun, the state capital, and is well-connected by road.
- Best Time to Visit: While the trek is accessible year-round, December to March transforms the landscape into a snowy paradise, ideal for those seeking a winter adventure.
Harshil: The Hidden Gem of Uttarakhand
Often referred to as the “Mini Switzerland of India,” Harshil is a tranquil hamlet perched at an altitude of 7,860 feet. Located along the banks of the Bhagirathi River, this picturesque destination is known for its apple orchards, cedar forests, and vibrant local culture. This could be the most underrated place in the Himalayas. Located 25 km away from Gangotri, it can serve as your base for various nearby treks like Saattal, Chitkul (HP), and various Bugyals. The Bagori and Mukhwa villages next to it are must-visit places.
There is an army cantonment in Harshil Valley which helps in its connectivity for all seasons. The best time to visit the valley is September and October. If you want to see snowfall, come here in the months of January and February. Harshil Valley is also famous for its apple orchards and Rajma.
The locals are very welcoming, and it feels like a home away from home. I have visited this place thrice in 3 years and can visit this place for the hundredth time.
- Accessibility: Harshil is approximately 290 km from Dehradun and is accessible via a scenic drive through winding mountain roads. The nearest railhead is in Rishikesh, and the closest airport is Jolly Grant in Dehradun.
- Winter Highlights: The snow-covered landscapes during winter add an ethereal charm, attracting nature lovers and peace seekers. Harshil’s serene environment is perfect for rejuvenation away from the bustling city life.
Dayara Bugyal: A Snowy Meadow of Dreams
Dayara Bugyal, one of the most beautiful high-altitude meadows in India, transforms into a snowy playground during winter. Located at an elevation of 11,000 feet, the sprawling meadow is a haven for skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts. The panoramic vistas of the Himalayan peaks, combined with the serene ambiance, make it an unforgettable destination.
- Accessibility: Dayara Bugyal is accessible via a short trek from Barsu village, which is about 40 km from Uttarkashi town. Dehradun serves as the nearest major city with rail and air connectivity.
- Activities: In addition to trekking, visitors can indulge in skiing, photography, and stargazing under crystal-clear skies.
Safety and Convenience: Enhanced Security Measures
Given the influx of tourists during the New Year celebrations, the Uttarakhand government implemented robust security measures to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors. Special teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local police, and disaster management squads were deployed across key areas, including Kedarkantha, Harshil, and Dayara. Equipped with satellite phones, walkie-talkies, snow chains, and searchlights, these teams worked tirelessly to manage the crowd and address any emergencies. Road maintenance crews ensured smooth access to even the most remote locations.

The state’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure and ensuring tourist safety has further boosted its appeal as a premier New Year destination. With over 5,000 visitors reported in Uttarkashi District alone during the celebrations, it is clear that the region’s allure remains unmatched.
