Travel Restrictions on Assam-Registered Vehicles Disrupt Tourism in Meghalaya
Shillong, July 26, 2024 — Recent developments in East Khasi Hills have seen significant disruptions to travel in Meghalaya due to new restrictions imposed by the Hynniewtrep National Youth Federation (HNYF). On Friday, HNYF members attempted to block Assam-registered vehicles from proceeding beyond Umtyngngar, a key entry point to popular tourist destinations such as Sohra and Dawki.
The HNYF’s actions are part of a broader demand for the introduction of a policy that limits the entry of non-local vehicles transporting tourists. This decision stems from allegations that local vehicles have been unfairly restricted from serving these prominent tourist spots.
The situation escalated when Sohra Sub Division Police arrived to negotiate with the HNYF members, seeking to resolve the blockade amicably. Despite their efforts, talks broke down, and the Special Operations Team (SOT) from Shillong was subsequently deployed to manage the situation. The SOT intervened and detained six HNYF members who were actively blocking the roads.
The restrictions imposed by the HNYF include a ban on all Assam-registered tourist taxis in the Umtyngngar area, effectively preventing them from accessing renowned spots beyond this checkpoint. While private vehicles with Assam registration are still allowed, tourist taxis face significant hurdles.
This move echoes similar disputes observed in other regions, such as the past disagreements between Sikkim and West Bengal over the regulation of out-of-state vehicles. In recent years, West Bengal has imposed fines on Sikkim vehicles entering its territory, reflecting a reciprocal approach to managing cross-border transport issues.
Travelers planning to visit Meghalaya should be aware of these new restrictions and consider alternative travel arrangements to avoid disruptions. Both tourists and local authorities are advised to stay updated on the evolving situation to ensure smooth travel experiences.
