Travel Guide to the Turquoise Dream of Ross and Smith Islands in Andaman Archipelago, India

Explore Ross and Smith Islands in Andaman, India: Pristine beaches, coral reefs, and cultural encounters await in this tropical paradise.

Ross Island Wildlife Sanctuary, situated in the Aerial Bay near Diglipur, North Andaman district of the Andaman and Nicobar, India, is connected with the adjacent Smith Island by a tombolo and collectively called as Ross and Smith Islands.

The islands’ Squeaky clean ivory beaches, bordered by dense tropical forests on one side and a crystalline turquoise sea on the other— along with the highly rich coral reefs housing colorful fishes and rare live corals— set the backdrop for all types of vibes you need for spending a high quality island vacation.

What to Expect in a Trip to Ross & Smith Islands

Connecting the Ross and Smith islands, the 600 meter long sand-bar (tombolo) that is crescent shaped at both end, gets submerged at high tide and presents itself as the prime attraction. This ephemeral bridge showcases a sublime landscape, transforming into a temporary beach (maximum 200 meter wide at low tide)  of soft silver sand meeting turquoise blue waters on both sides— Andaman Sea at the eastern side and a sheltered bay at West— during low tide. Off the western shore of this sandbar (south-western of the Smith Island), there a is large seagrass bed that is ideal for seacow (Dugong) spotting and reachable by boat.

The coastal stretches along the eastern shore of Smith Island, facing the Andaman Sea, are abundant with sandy beaches. Among them, the most popular is situated at the southern tip of Smith Island, where a permanent triangle-shaped white sand beach is located at the juncture where the sandbar attaches to its shore. Snorkeling and beach scuba diving on the eastern side of this beach reveal a massive reef slope with living corals, providing an underwater spectacle. From here, a walk along the shore further north along its eastern side will reveal two more exclusive beaches that are less visited by tourists and will provide the ultimate romantic and secluded beachcombing vibes.

Diving enthusiasts can embark on boat and experience awesome diving adventures off the unspoiled fringing coral reefs that spread across the whole eastern side of the Smith Island. This entire region, constituting the eastern side of Ross and Smith Islands, is designated a conserved marine sanctuary, boasting a rich marine ecosystem with sea turtles, dolphins, dugongs, and other captivating fauna.

Take a moment to explore both the shore and offshore, keeping an eye out for the majestic Giant Clam Shells that showcase their magnificent size, intricate patterns, and exquisite colors.
