In a scenic revelation, the South West Khasi Hills (SWKH) district of Meghalaya unveils its latest gem: the enchanting 4-step Phod Rai Rai Falls, swiftly asserting itself as a premier tourist magnet. Nestled amidst verdant landscapes, this cascading wonder marks a significant addition to the region’s burgeoning tourism repertoire.
Spanning a picturesque 5-kilometer distance from Mawkyrwat, the Phod Rai Rai Falls, nestled in Mawranglang Laikyntoit village, beckons travelers with its captivating allure. Comprising four distinct waterfalls, cascading over 25-30 meters, known as the four-sisters ‘Kshaid Phod Rai-Rai,’ these natural marvels exhibit an individualistic charm, captivating visitors with their unique splendor.
The journey to this ethereal haven presents a treat for adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike. Embarking on a trail marked by stunning green hills, traversing caves, encountering monoliths, and basking in the warmth of natural hot springs, travelers find themselves immersed in a paradise of natural wonders long before reaching the falls.
The falls, a testament to nature’s grandeur, have already begun to entice local tourists, drawing them to witness the untouched beauty of the cascading waters. “The Phod Rai Rai Falls, with its four sisters, stands as a testament to the region’s untouched beauty and captivating allure,” remarked a local visitor, awestruck by the scenic splendor.
The local community, recognizing the falls’ potential, has embarked on a concerted effort to transform the area into not just a tourist hotspot but also an educational and research hub. Roland Marwein, the Rangbah Shnong of Mawranglang Laikyntoit, shared insights into the community’s vision, outlining plans to develop the falls into a trekking haven and a study ground for students and researchers.
The area surrounding the falls boasts a ‘restricted forest’ named ‘Law Pon Pyrnon‘—a sanctuary of diverse flora and fauna. Marwein emphasized the significance of this haven, citing the presence of ‘Tiw Khrismas’ (Christmas Flowers) and an array of flora and fauna, making it an ideal learning ground for enthusiasts and scholars keen on biodiversity
Aside from these enchanting falls, the region embraces several other natural marvels. Visitors can immerse themselves in the tranquility of the Od-Ringai Falls in Mawten village, characterized by a stunning pool atop a 100-meter-long cascade. Urnar Falls in Mawrap village, featuring pools both at its top and bottom, provide another breathtaking spectacle. The scenic beauty extends to the Umngi, Rilang, and Kynshi rivers, offering serene vistas and opportunities for exploration.
Moreover the community has undertaken initiatives to enhance visitor experiences. The construction of a Children’s Park near the Phod-Rai-Rai falls, backed by joint efforts from the Village Employment Councils of Nongnat, Nongmawlein, and Mawpharkhrew, stands as a testament to their commitment to catering to family-friendly recreational spaces.
Plans are underway for infrastructure development, including footbridges over rivers, approach roads, and footpaths leading to the falls. The government’s support, particularly through the RURBAN Mission and MGNREGS, has enabled the commencement of these projects, further augmenting the region’s appeal.
However, the community is keenly aware of the delicate balance needed between tourism and conservation. Marwein stressed the importance of responsible tourism practices, urging the Village Councils to set appropriate pricing models that reflect the true value of these natural treasures.
As the Phod Rai Rai Falls emerges as a beacon of natural splendor, it heralds a new chapter in SWKH’s tourism narrative. With its unspoiled charm, coupled with the community’s dedication to sustainable development, the region is poised to captivate and charm travelers seeking an authentic rendezvous with nature.
As visitors begin to flock, drawn by the cascading beauty and serene landscapes, the falls stand not just as a tourist destination but as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of mankind and nature—a testament to cherish and preserve for generations to come.
