Sikkim Introduces Odd-Even Vehicle Rule in Gangtok to Manage Tourist Traffic

Gangtok, – Travelers planning to visit Sikkim this winter should be aware of a new traffic regulation designed to manage the influx of tourists. The Sikkim government has announced an odd-even vehicle rule in Gangtok, effective from November 5, 2024. This decision comes after the first snowfall of the season, which has drawn a significant number of tourists to the region.

New Traffic Regulations for Gangtok

The odd-even system aims to ease congestion during peak hours in Gangtok, particularly along busy areas within the city’s municipal limits. Key details are outlined below:

Traffic Schedule

  • Odd-Even Timings:
    • Restricted hours: 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM and 3:30 PM – 6:00 PM daily.
    • Unrestricted period: 12:00 PM – 3:30 PM, allowing for uninterrupted travel.
  • Vehicle Days:
    • Vehicles with odd-numbered plates (ending in 1, 3, 5, 7, 9) are allowed to drive on odd dates.
    • Vehicles with even-numbered plates (ending in 0, 2, 4, 6, 8) can operate on even dates.

Exemptions and Key Routes

Certain vehicles and routes are exempt from this regulation:

  • Exempt Routes: Indira Bye-Pass and Northern Bye-Pass are not covered by the rule.
  • Exempt Vehicles: Emergency services, essential service vehicles, specific government and media vehicles, local two-wheelers, state-registered taxis, self-driven tourist cars registered outside Sikkim, and vehicles used for weddings or funerals.
  • Weekends and Holidays: The rule will not be enforced on 2nd and 4th Saturdays, Sundays, and government-approved holidays, ensuring unrestricted movement on these days.

Guidance for Travelers

Tourists driving in Gangtok are advised to check their vehicle’s registration number and plan their journeys accordingly to avoid penalties. The restricted periods may impact those visiting popular spots in and around the city, so adhering to the schedule will help minimize delays.

Traffic Monitoring and Penalties

Law enforcement will strictly monitor compliance with the new rule, and violators will face fines under the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988. The government’s aim is to improve travel conditions for residents and visitors during the busy winter season.

Travel Tips

  • Plan Ahead: Schedule visits to local attractions outside restricted hours when possible.
  • Public Transport: Consider using local taxis and public transport to avoid inconvenience.
  • Stay Informed: Keep an eye on updates from local authorities for any adjustments to the rule.

For those planning to experience the snow-clad beauty of Sikkim, this initiative aims to ensure a smoother and more enjoyable visit to Gangtok’s bustling streets.
