Srinagar, Kashmir: In response to heavy snowfall, authorities in the Sophian District have announced the temporary closure of the Mughal Road, which connects Poonch district to Sophian in the Kashmir Valley. The closure is in effect until March, with expectations of reopening in early April. Despite the challenges posed by the winter weather, officials note that this year, a dry spell allowed for the road to remain open for the longest period in its history.
“The dry spell this year enabled us to keep the road open for an extended period. We are working towards its early restoration in April,” stated the Sophian District Authority.
As of now, the road is accessible up to Poshana from the Poonch side and Heerpora/Hirpora from the Sophian side. This partial opening provides an opportunity for tourists to explore alternative attractions near Heerpora Wildlife Sanctuary.
Notably, with the closure of the prime attraction, Peer ki Gali, due to heavy snow accumulation, tourists are encouraged to visit other picturesque locations. Among these, Raineera/Raineer and Shepkhor Meadow are highlighted as some of the best meadows in Kashmir, offering an authentic snowy Kashmiri experience.
Winter enthusiasts seeking the charm of snow-covered landscapes can still enjoy the beauty of the region despite the temporary road closure. Local authorities emphasize that the closure is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of travelers during adverse weather conditions.
Travelers planning a visit to the Kashmir Valley are advised to stay updated on the road conditions and follow official announcements for the reopening of the Mughal Road in April. The alternative attractions near Heerpora Wildlife Sanctuary promise an unforgettable winter experience, showcasing the pristine beauty of Kashmiri meadows under a blanket of snow.
