Nestled in the turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea and bragging an astounding 80 feet of underwater visibility with dense formations of colorful live coral, the North and South Cinque Islands had long been off-limits to tourists visiting the Andamans. However, in 2023, authorities began welcoming travelers to experience the Cinque Islands’ unspoiled beauty. Situated at the southern end of Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, Cinque Islands are known for their vibrant coral reefs, marine life, and clear waters, making them a popular spot for snorkeling and diving. Both North & South Cinque Islands are also part of a designated wildlife sanctuary that shelters species like rays, reef sharks, sea turtles, and tropical fish. The exquisiteness of the North and South Cinque Islands has made them a popular choice for the island hoppers and increasingly taking place in the regular Andaman tour packages provided by the renowned tour operators.
Both the Cinque Islands boast a mesmerizing blend of rocky peninsulas, white sandy beaches, tropical forests, and crystal-clear turquoise waters. North Cinque Island, with its three distinct peninsulas interconnected by sandbars, offers panoramic views from hills reaching heights of 154 m. The southern counterpart, South Cinque Island, adds to the allure with its white sand sloping beaches, forested hills in the background, and highly diverse marine life. The passage between them, known as Cinque Strait, invites exploration of stunning gardens of soft corals, meadows of vibrant boulder corals, and rich marine fauna, creating a haven for underwater enthusiasts.
How to Reach Cinque Islands
To reach the Cinque Islands one have to hire a Govt authorized fishing speedboat or a mechanized dinghy from Port Blair or Chidiyatapu. Here are the key details:
- Chartered Boats from Port Blair: Accessing North and South Cinque Islands typically requires private charters, as these islands are uninhabited and fall under strict environmental protection. These private boats depart from Port Blair and cover both islands during the journey.
- Group Tours During Peak Season: For budget-conscious travelers, some tour operators organize shared boat trips during peak seasons like December and January. Joining these group trips can reduce costs, depending on the number of participants.
- Permissions: Visitors must obtain prior permission from the Forest Department as the islands are part of the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park and are protected for conservation.
- Activities and Logistics: The trip generally includes snorkeling, exploring coral reefs, and enjoying the pristine beaches. Travelers typically return to Port Blair by evening after an 8-10 hour excursion.
Cinque Island Trip Cost
As one of the most premier island-hopping tours in the Andamans, visiting the Cinque Islands requires chartering boats at a significant cost. A fishing speedboat with an 8-seater capacity typically costs ₹60,000 to ₹90,000 for a round trip from Port Blair, depending upon the duration and activities involved.
Budget-Friendly Option:
For smaller groups or solo travelers, join-in group trips are available during the peak season (December–January). These trips are organized by select tour operators and boat operators, allowing visitors to share the cost, making it a more economical option.

North Cinque Island
North Cinque Island, a designated Wildlife Sanctuary, remains uninhabited and covered by dense tropical wet evergreen and littoral/mangrove forests. The island is rich in avian biodiversity and features pristine landscapes untouched by human intervention. Surrounding coral reefs provide a habitat for diverse marine life. A lighthouse maintained by the Department of Lighthouses and Lightships is also located on the island. North Cinque Island comprises two parts connected by a sandbar. The island was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary through Notification No. 113-86/CF/WL/50-Vol. I dated 16.2.1987.
A lighthouse on the tallest hill of the northernmost and largest peninsula of North Cinque Island was established in 1972, approximately 2 km from the landing point. It is a 6.7-meter rectangular masonry tower, painted in a red-and-white band color scheme, with an LED flasher light powered by batteries and solar panels. Accessibility to the lighthouse is only by sea, requiring travel on a departmental or chartered vessel to the anchorage point, followed by a mechanized dinghy to the shore and a walk through dense forest and hilly terrain. Opposite the lighthouse (on the southeastern side) lies a small sandy beach. Across from it, about 50 meters offshore, a sand-and-stony bottom becomes exposed during low tide. This bottom type extends to a depth of 8 meters, beyond which a live coral reef belt begins, becoming denser at 10 meters deep.

The southern shore of the northern peninsula on North Cinque Island forms a sandbar (tombolo) that connects with the southern peninsula. This white sprawling beach has turquoise waters on both sides. The western side beach features shallow waters and an extended sandy bottom interspersed with unique coral formations—a favorite among tourists and one of the best sites for snorkeling, swimming, and sunbathing. This area also serves as the anchorage point for visitors.
