Andaman & Nicobar Islands Introduce Policy for Sustainable Beach Shack Development Ahead of Tourist Influx

A Comprehensive Framework for Beach Shacks Enforced to Harmonize Tourism and Conservation Efforts

As the Andaman & Nicobar Islands anticipate an impending surge in tourist footfall in the coming winter season, the local administration has introduced a meticulously detailed policy aimed at regulating the establishment of temporary beach shacks across its pristine coastline. This proactive measure comes in response to concerns over the unregulated proliferation of makeshift structures that have encroached upon the islands’ scenic beauty.

Recognizing the pivotal role of tourism while prioritizing the preservation of the islands’ natural ecosystem, this policy delineates a holistic approach to the organization and management of beach shacks. Dividing the beaches into two groups—Group A and Group B—each with its maximum allowable number of shacks, the policy ensures a balanced distribution of these establishments while preventing overcrowding.

Group A Beaches:

Kalapathar Beach in Swaraj Dweep, South Andaman, permits a maximum of 10 shacks. Elephanta Beach in Swaraj Dweep allows 15 shacks, while Laxmanpur Beach and Bharatpur Beach in Shaheed Dweep, South Andaman, accommodate 20 shacks each. Additionally, Corbyn’s Cove in Port Blair, South Andaman, has a limit of 10 shacks.

Group B Beaches:

Sitapur Beach in Swaraj Dweep hosts up to 5 shacks, whereas Badabalu Beach in Chidyatapu allows 10 shacks. Raman Bagicha and Cutbert Bay Beach in Rangat, Middle Andaman, permit 15 and 10 shacks, respectively. Baludera Beach in Baratang, Middle Andaman, can have 15 shacks, while Karmatang Beach in Mayabunder and Ramnagar Beach in Diglipur, North Andaman, allow 15 and 10 shacks, respectively.

This strategic allocation aims to maintain a harmonious blend between tourism development and ecological preservation, preventing excessive encroachment while allowing visitors to relish the diverse coastal experiences each beach offers.

In a bid to maintain environmental sustainability, the policy mandates the use of eco-friendly materials, such as bamboo, thatch, and palm leaves, for shack construction. Strict guidelines regarding the size, design, and materials have been laid down, emphasizing the integration of these structures into the coastal environment.

Moreover, the policy underscores waste management and sanitation, obligating beach shack operators to uphold cleanliness standards and provide portable toilet facilities meeting stringent criteria. The Monitoring Committee, comprising officials from various departments, has been established to conduct regular inspections, ensuring adherence to safety, sanitation, and policy compliance.

A spokesperson from the Andaman & Nicobar Administration expressed optimism about this policy’s pivotal role in fostering a more organized and environmentally conscious approach to beach shack development. It is envisaged not only to enhance the tourist experience but also to safeguard the islands’ natural ecosystem and pristine beauty.

The announcement has been received positively by tourism stakeholders and residents alike. They anticipate that this policy will streamline beachfront activities, elevate the quality of tourist experiences, and uphold the islands’ reputation as an environmentally conscious and welcoming destination.

As the islands brace themselves for an influx of visitors during the upcoming peak season, this visionary policy underscores their commitment to striking a harmonious balance between tourism development and the preservation of the islands’ unparalleled natural heritage.

Beach Shacks Experience in Andaman Islands:

Nestled along the picturesque shorelines of the Andaman Islands, beach shacks offer a unique coastal retreat for visitors. Constructed predominantly from locally sourced materials like bamboo, thatch, and palm leaves, these quaint structures seamlessly blend with the coastal landscape, creating a laid-back ambiance. Tourists revel in the opportunity to relish local delicacies, sip tropical drinks, and unwind in hammocks or beach chairs while soaking in panoramic ocean views. With live music performances and cultural events, these shacks serve as vibrant hubs for socializing, enhancing the allure of the Andaman’s serene coastal beauty.
