Darjeeling Toy Train to Operate Night Services: A New Chapter in Himalayan Railway’s Tourism Strategy

Darjeeling, known for its timeless charm, is about to offer an unparalleled experience to tourists. The Himalayan Railway has made an unprecedented decision that will transform the iconic toy train ride into an enchanting nighttime adventure.

Updates from Darjeeling’s Tourism Scene

Amid recent controversies surrounding tourism taxes, the Himalayan Railway has announced a groundbreaking move that will redefine the winter vacation scene. Starting this December, the beloved toy train will extend its services into the night, introducing a unique opportunity for travelers to relish the Himalayan foothills under the serene moonlit sky.

Sleep Festival and Extended Train Services

Coinciding with the Sleep Festival until December 10th, the extended hours of the toy train will mark a significant milestone. Travelers will have the chance to traverse between Darjeeling and specially arranged sleep stations designed exclusively for this extraordinary occasion.

Enhanced Nighttime Experience in Darjeeling

Sabyasachi De, Chief Communications Officer of the North-Eastern Railway, highlighted the substantial surge in tourist footfall during the Sleep Festival. This initiative aims to capitalize on this momentum by curating immersive cultural experiences aboard the toy train, promising an unforgettable nighttime journey.

Addressing Environmental Concerns

To address concerns about waste management, the Darjeeling Municipality has reinstated a nominal tax for tourists, aiming to contribute to sustainable tourism. Visitors are encouraged to participate by paying a symbolic fee of 20 rupees towards waste management, aligning with the municipality’s vision for responsible tourism.

Local Perspectives and Tourism Outlook

Darjeeling remains an evergreen favorite among Bengali tourists, especially during the winter season. Local stakeholders, including hoteliers and tourism entrepreneurs, express optimism regarding the municipality’s decision, foreseeing a positive impact on the local tourism sector.
