In a significant boost for North Sikkim’s tourism and connectivity, the much-anticipated alternative road from Naga Namgor to Lachung and Lachen officially opened today, 3rd November-2024, as announced by Sikkim’s Roads and Bridges Minister two days ago. The new highway restores seamless travel to these popular tourist destinations, which have been challenging to reach since June due to a severe roadblock on the main highway near Naga.
This newly completed road, which bypasses the blocked section, reconnects the Mangan subdivision to the northern areas. Naga Namgor, already popular for the scenic Naga Waterfalls, serves as the starting point of the route. With this alternative now accessible, both tourists and locals can expect a smoother and more reliable journey to Lachung and Lachen.
Additionally, the Sikkim government will begin issuing permits for tourists to Lachung and Lachen from 4th Nov-2024, ensuring visitors can once again explore the region’s breathtaking landscapes and unique cultural sites. This reopening is expected to revitalize tourism in North Sikkim, offering travelers the chance to experience the area’s pristine beauty and local traditions as the winter season approaches.
The reopening of this route is anticipated to aid the region’s economy, particularly benefiting local businesses and tourism operators who depend on the seasonal influx of visitors. The Sikkim government, in collaboration with the Border Roads Organization (BRO), fast-tracked the construction of the alternative route to meet the demands of both local residents and tourism.
