Nathang Valley and Zuluk, two high altitude Himalayan destinations in the Indian state of Sikkim, offer distinct winter experiences.
Starting from December and lasting till the middle of April- often extended to early May, situated at around 13,500 feet, Nathang or Gnathang captivates the visitors with its whiteout mounateous plateau, surrounded by snow-capped craggy peaks and inhabited by nomadic yak herders, while Zuluk, located at 10,000 feet on the historic Silk Route, boasts winding roads, sharp bends, and panoramic views of the Himalaya, including the majestic Kanchenjunga.
Both places provide a serene escape winter, allowing travelers to immerse themselves in the tranquility of the Eastern Himalayas while exploring the remnants of the ancient trade routes that once connected Tibet with India.
In late January, Nathang Valley, typically adorned in snow, welcomes adventure enthusiasts. This year’s milder snowfall unveils a unique charm, leaving landscapes snowless yet captivating. The rugged terrain showcases a palette of earthy tones — from rich browns and ochres to vibrant greens and yellows — while partial snow-covered mountain tops add a touch of winter’s magic. Along the Sherathang-Nathang Road, the Eastern Himalayas paint a vivid picture, where azure skies meet the rocky slopes, creating a mesmerizing contrast. The absence of snow accentuates the raw beauty, inviting travelers to explore the spectrum of colors etched in this high-altitude wonderland.
